The melanin then converts the UV into heat which it them distributes harmlessly.

Even if you avoid sunbathing altogether you may still get age spots. One of the biggest causes comes from driving your car. UV from the sun comes in two forms, UVA, and UVB. The glass in your car windscreen naturally shields you from the UVA. However it does not intercept the UVB, and this is the one that causes the damage.
